Protection of Meters

💡
Key learnings:
  • Meter Protection Definition: Meter protection is defined as measures taken to safeguard electrical meters from damage due to overcurrent.
  • Overcurrent Causes: Overcurrent can occur due to incorrect connections, wrong meter ratings, or unexpected circuit conditions.
  • Single Diode Protection: A single diode can protect a meter by short-circuiting and diverting excess current when voltage exceeds a certain limit.
  • Double Diode Protection: Using two diodes in opposite directions protects the meter from overcurrent in both directions.
  • Importance of Diodes in Meter Protection: Semiconductor diodes are essential for preventing meter damage by managing excess current.

When measuring an electrical signal, there is often a risk of over current through the meter. This can happen for several reasons.

  1. The meter may be connected wrongly to the circuit.
  2. The rating of the meter is selected wrongly for the measurement.
  3. Occurrences of over current in the circuit itself during measurement.

Overcurrent causes overheating, which can permanently damage the meter. While overcurrent can’t be entirely avoided, using a properly rated semiconductor diode can protect the meter.

When a meter measures an electrical signal, there is always a voltage drop across it. If the current exceeds the safety limit, the voltage drop will also exceed the rated limit. For example, if the meter’s rated voltage drop limit is 0.6 volts, connecting a diode with a forward barrier voltage of 0.6 volts across the meter can help. If the voltage drop exceeds 0.6 volts due to excess current, the diode will short-circuit, diverting the current away from the meter.

When the diode short-circuits, it diverts the current away from the meter, protecting it from overheating. This method is called Single Diode Protection when only one diode is used.

Connecting two diodes in opposite directions across the meter is called Double Diode Protection. This setup protects the meter from overcurrent in both directions.double diode meter protection
