Electrical work can expose people to shock, arc flash, burns, fire and unexpected equipment movement. The safest normal approach is to switch off every relevant energy source, isolate it, apply the required locks and tags, release or restrain stored energy and have a qualified person verify the de-energised state with suitable test equipment.
Treat conductors and equipment as energised until the full isolation process is complete. Only qualified people should test electrical circuits or work on exposed energised parts. When energised work is justified and permitted, use the required work procedure, approach limits, insulating tools, barriers and task-specific personal protective equipment.
