Generator

A generator converts mechanical energy into electrical energy by electromagnetic induction. Relative motion between conductors and magnetic flux induces an electromotive force. The machine design determines whether the output is alternating current or direct current and how voltage, frequency and current are controlled.

Select and operate a generator by checking rated power, voltage, frequency, speed, excitation, insulation class, cooling, efficiency and fault protection. A grid-connected synchronous generator must match the grid’s voltage, frequency, phase sequence and phase angle before connection. An induction generator normally needs reactive power from the grid or capacitors and generates when driven above synchronous speed.
