Utilities

Building electrical systems distribute power from the service equipment to lighting, fixed loads, receptacles and appliances. A safe installation needs conductors with enough ampacity for the load, suitable insulation and wiring methods, overcurrent protection, reliable disconnection and a permanent equipment-grounding path where required. Local wiring rules govern the detailed design and installation.

Select an appliance for the available supply voltage, circuit capacity, location and duty. Check its rated input, plug or connection method, earthing or double-insulation provision, clearance, ventilation, moisture exposure and maintenance instructions. For electric water heating, compare resistance and heat-pump systems by capacity, recovery rate, installation needs and whole-life energy use.
