Wind energy simply means kinetic energy of air in motion. Air flows on the earth due to uneven heating of the earth surface by radiant energy from the sun.

Wind is moving air. In many places that flow is steady enough to turn a turbine. Driving a generator from that shaft is wind energy electricity generation, also called wind power generation or wind electricity generation.

Machines of this kind use a Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) or, more often, a Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT) to cut the need for coal, oil and gas. Those fossil fuels still supply most of the world’s electricity, but they are finite. Ember’s 2025 figures put fossil generation at about 57%, nuclear at about 9% and renewables (hydro, solar energy, wind and others) at about 34%. Solar, not wind, has been the fastest-growing source in recent years. Wind still adds a large block of new generation each year and has no fuel cost, though the machines still need scheduled maintenance. A wind energy electricity generation system takes some land for pads and roads, but crops or grazing can continue between turbines. One turbine rarely supplies a town’s electricity on its own. Operators group many machines into a wind farm and site it where mean wind speed can turn the blades. Wind on the rotor turns a generator. The output runs down a tower cable and joins the cables from the other turbines.

Power from the wind turbines meets at a collector point, then a substation. From there it can feed nearby loads or go into the grid.
