What is Dielectric Grease?
Dielectric grease is an electrically insulating grease used to seal out moisture and contamination, reduce corrosion and lubricate connector seals. Many products are silicone-based, but dielectric connector greases can use other base oils.
A typical silicone product combines polydimethylsiloxane fluid with a silica thickener. It repels water and has high electrical resistivity. These properties do not make every dielectric grease suitable for transferring heat.
What is Dielectric Grease Used For?
Dielectric grease protects selected electrical connections rather than interrupting electric current . When a suitable connector is mated, its terminals displace the grease at their contact points and retain metal-to-metal contact.
Chemical resistance varies by formulation. A specific silicone compound may repel water yet be diluted by solvents such as xylene, mineral spirits or methyl ethyl ketone. Check the product data sheet and its compatibility with cable seals, plastics and elastomers before use.
Some thermal interface compounds are silicone-based and contain thermally conductive fillers. Ordinary dielectric connector grease should not be assumed to transfer heat effectively. For a PCB heat sink, use a product rated for that thermal application.

Is Dielectric Grease Conductive?
Dielectric grease has high volume resistivity and is not intended to carry current. In a properly designed connector, current passes through direct contact between the metal terminals, not through the grease.
An insulator can still fail if the applied voltage exceeds its rating. A multimeter continuity test across a visible grease layer may show an open circuit, but the diode or buzzer setting does not measure dielectric strength. Use the manufacturer’s dielectric-strength, volume-resistivity and voltage data instead.
How to Use Dielectric Grease?
Switch off and isolate the equipment before application. Because the product is an insulator, use only a grease approved by the connector or equipment manufacturer and follow its instructions.
Thermal paste is a separate product designed to conduct heat across a thin interface. Use a specified thermal compound between a heat sink and components such as transistors or an LED, rather than substituting ordinary connector grease.
Clean the specified surfaces and apply only the amount given in the product instructions. For a spark-plug boot, this can mean a thin layer inside the boot and on the plug’s ceramic body. For approved terminal applications, reassemble the connector so that firm metal-to-metal contact remains.
Where Should You Not Use Dielectric Grease?
Do not use dielectric grease as a substitute for a conductor or for contact force. Its insulating property means it should not bridge an open gap between contacts.
A sound connector can carry AC current or DC current after approved grease is applied because the terminals maintain direct metal-to-metal contact. If the contacts do not mate, the grease will not create a connection.
Do not apply it to surfaces that will be painted or finished, to incompatible materials or outside the product’s stated temperature and voltage limits. Some connector makers prohibit aftermarket grease, so the component and product instructions take priority.
What is Dielectric Grease Made of?
Many silicone-based dielectric compounds contain polydimethylsiloxane fluid thickened with silica.
Dielectric grease is a functional category, not a single recipe. Other connector greases use synthetic hydrocarbon or fluorinated base oils, and formulations vary with temperature range, sealing needs and material compatibility. Check the data sheet for the exact product.
Can Vaseline be used as Dielectric Grease?
Petroleum jelly and dielectric grease can both form moisture barriers, but they have different formulations and performance data. Their appearance does not make them interchangeable.
Do not assume that either product is suitable from its generic name alone. Temperature range, service life and compatibility with plastics, elastomers and metals depend on the specific formulation.
A purpose-made dielectric grease provides published electrical and environmental properties for its intended applications. Petroleum jelly does not automatically meet the same connector or equipment specification.
Use the product named by the connector, equipment or vehicle manufacturer. If no lubricant is specified, confirm compatibility and ratings before applying one.
