Testing an Induction motor helps find problems in the power supply and motor before they cause a costly failure. Start with the nameplate data and record the test conditions so later readings are comparable. Measurements of voltage, current, temperature and vibration can expose overload, unbalance, insulation damage and mechanical wear. Testing identifies conditions that may waste energy; it does not improve efficiency by itself.

Basic Measurements Before Testing

Current
Record the line current in every phase. An average may be needed for a calculation, but it must not replace the individual readings because an average can hide current unbalance.

Voltage
Measure all line-to-line voltages at the motor terminals. Record both the average and the voltage unbalance, because an average alone can hide a supply problem.

Power
For a three-wire, three-phase supply, measure real power with two wattmeter elements and add their readings. One wattmeter may be switched between the two required connections if the test procedure permits it.

Resistance
Do not treat protective-earth continuity, insulation resistance and winding resistance as the same measurement. Follow the motor manufacturer or applicable test standard for each one. Before a de-energised test, isolate the motor and controls, apply lockout and tagout, verify that the circuit is de-energised, and safely discharge stored charge after the test.

Choose tests for the motor type, supply, rating and purpose of the investigation. The main groups are:

Preliminary Tests

These checks look for electrical and mechanical defects in the induction motor. De-energised inspection requires verified isolation. Any check that requires the motor to run or be energised needs a controlled test procedure and qualified personnel.

  1. Inspect the motor for signs of:
    • Broken or damaged rotor bars
    • High-resistance joints
    • Cracked end rings
  2. Measure and compare no-load current in all phases
  3. Perform a dielectric withstand test only under an approved procedure
  4. Measure the air gap at the specified positions
  5. Check current unbalance
  6. Measure bearing temperature rise
  7. Measure shaft voltage where the application requires it
  8. Confirm the direction of rotation
  9. Record the noise level and any abnormal sounds
  10. Measure vibration at defined locations and operating conditions
  11. Check air-gap eccentricity

Performance Tests

Performance tests quantify operating characteristics, losses and thermal behaviour. Use the instruments, test conditions and calculations specified by the applicable standard.

  1. No-load test

  5. Stray-load-loss test
