Servo Motor Applications (Robotics, Solar Tracking Systems And More)

💡
Key learnings:
  • Servo Motor Definition: A servo motor is defined as a motor that operates on the principle of a servomechanism, crucial for precise position control.
  • Robotics Applications: Servo motors enable precise joint movements in robots, essential for tasks like picking and placing objects.
  • Camera Auto Focus: Modern digital cameras use servo motors to adjust lenses for sharp focus, ensuring clear images.
  • Conveyor Systems: Servo motors control the precise movement of conveyor belts in industrial processes like bottle filling.
  • Servo Motor in Solar Tracking Systems: Servo motors adjust solar panels to follow the sun’s movement, increasing energy efficiency.

A servo motor is a closed-loop actuator built around a servomechanism. The loop holds shaft angle, and often speed or torque, to a command. An open-loop DC motor is a poor fit for a control-surface position loop such as an aircraft tail. The pages below cover common places that closed-loop motor shows up.

Servo Motor in Robotics

servo mechanism

Robot joints are a common servo job. A pick-and-place arm uses servos so each joint can stop at a planned angle, pick a part, then set it down at another pose.

To move a part from A to B, each joint needs a planned angle. Servo motors on those joints hold that angle under load.

Once the path is stored, the controller repeats it. Hobby and teaching arms often send PWM pulse widths to each motor. Industrial arms use encoder-based servo drives instead of RC PWM. Either way, the closed loop holds angle in a way a bare DC motor does not. Small electronics kits follow the hobby path. Many best Arduino starter kits pack a micro servo for that experiment.

Servo Motor in Conveyors

Servo Motor in Conveyors

Indexing conveyors move a part from one station to the next and stop on a mark. On a bottle filler, that mark is the fill head, then the packer. A servo drive is one way to hit those stops. Many long haul belts still use an induction motor and a VFD instead.

On an indexing filler, the belt is coupled to servo motors so the bottle stops under the nozzle, fills, then indexes to the next station. The loop keeps running until the line is stopped. Shaft-angle control is what makes that stop repeatable.

Servo Motor Applications in Camera Auto Focus

auto focus servo
Many cameras auto-focus on the subject. A processor scores sharpness, then a small actuator moves the lens group. Some modules use a closed-loop motor. Many compact and phone modules use a voice-coil or ultrasonic actuator instead.

If the lens group sits at the wrong focus distance, the image is soft. A small in-camera motor can nudge that group until contrast peaks. Voice-coil focus units share that job. Both sit under servo motor applications on this page only when the actuator is a closed-loop motor.

Servo Motor in Robotic Vehicles

robotic vehicle
Small robot vehicles often drive the wheels with continuous-rotation hobby servos, which can start, stop and hold a speed command. Larger military and plant vehicles usually use traction motors plus a separate steering actuator, not an RC servo.

Servo Motor in Solar Tracking Systems

Fixed solar panels sit at one tilt all day. The sun’s elevation and azimuth change, so a fixed array is off-normal for much of the day and collects less energy than a tracker at the same site.

Small arrays can put servo motors on the panel so the face tracks the sun. Utility trackers more often use geared motors or linear actuators. Either method can raise collected energy versus a fixed tilt. The gain depends on site and season.

Solar Tracking System

Sun-angle pointing is another closed-loop job a servo can do on a small tracker. The list above is only a sample of servomotor uses.
